Canim & Mahood Falls South Canim Hwy (8000 Road)
Some of the best examples of columnar lava can be seen on the steep sided canyon walls as you walk
along the rim to the viewsites. Long before you see the falls you can hear their roar,
especially early in the year when water is still high.
On your way back, you might want to take a dip in Canim Lake at Roserim Beach, another of our lesser known treasures.
Round trip driving time to falls is less than 2 hours.
Deception Falls - South Canim Hwy (8000 Road)
Deception Falls cascades 40 feet to its gorge from the rim of a canyon cut into siltstone.
Tucked away on the northwest side of Mahood Lake, it is one of our more remote scenic areas.
A quick dip in Mahood Lake and a picnic by the beach would round off your day nicely. The
drive to the parking area for the falls will take about 3 hours, so plan for an entire day
of fun (without crowds!).
Crooked Lake - Hendrix Lake Road (6000 Road)
Crooked Lake was once the scene of a massive forest fire that raged all the way to Spanish
Lake. Ghostly remnants of a forest that once graced the steep slopes of Crooked Mountain
overlook the beautiful lake below. This lake has few visitors most of the summer, so you
may find you have the entire public beach to yourself. The drive to this lake will take
about 3 and a half hours, so again, plan for the day.
Hendrix Falls - (6000 and 7000 Road)
These falls lie within an hour's drive from Minac. You know you are at the trail head
when you see signs erected by Weldwood at the parking area. You will find small plaques
along the 10 minute walk which identify our main coniferous and deciduous tree species. On
your way back from the falls, you might stop at Christmas Lake for a picnic lunch.
Ruth Lake & Forest Grove Area Eagle Creek Road
Eagle Creek Road winds through farm and ranch land, passing Hawkins Lake on its way to Ruth Lake
and Forest Grove. Ruth is one of the most popular swimming spots in the area. After a refreshing
dip, the road will take you by a speciality bakery on the 500 Road and then into Forest Grove where
you will find gas, liquor, post office, groceries, and a farmers' flea market every Saturday.
The Flourmill Volcanoes - (6000 and 7000 Road)
This trip takes you to the most remote corner of our area, the western entrance to Wells
Gray Provincial Park. The trip will take about 3 to 4 hours, depending on how many stops you
make to take in the great views of our mountains. Crossing Spanish Creek Bridge you enter the
park. Be warned, the road is not well maintained and has several high spots. Once at the
parking area, you simply follow the trail as it climbs about 900 feet to the rim of the Twin
Cones. This is an all day trip into a remote area with no facilities, so be prepared.
